ArLERT School 2019

ArLERT School 2019

ARLE Research & Training School

Lisboa, June 24-25

Programme (updated version)        Abstracts

The ARLE Research and Training School 2019 will take place at University NOVA of Lisbon, in June 24 and 25, and will focus on quantitative and qualitative methodologies in L1 education research. Addressed to PhD candidates and other junior researchers, it aims at providing an opportunity for reflection on different methods and research methodologies both quantitative and qualitative, and providing trainees effective participation in practical activities, with the chance of confronting their own research.

The event will begin with a poster session where each trainee will present methodology issues about his/her on-going research project – this poster will be previously sent when trainees register. For the rest of the first day, trainees will attend one of the three parallel workshops by Ilana Elkad-Lehman (Levinsky C.E., Israel), on narrative research in L1 education – theoretical, methodological and practical aspects; Bernard Schneuwly & Glaís Sales Cordeiro (U.Geneva, Switzerland), on a method of description and analysis of teaching sequences to understand the teachers' work and the objects taught in L1 classrooms; or Luís Filipe Barbeiro (P.I.Leiria, Portugal) & José António Brandão de Carvalho (U. Minho, Portugal), on research on writing: process, genres and writing skills development. The next morning, we will have a presentation by Gert Rijlaarsdam (U.Amsterdam, The Netherlands; U.Antwerp, Belgium) on issues in L1 research methodology, balancing practice and research, qualitative and quantitative approaches. The closing session will be a plenary discussion where trainees will emphasize the School’s input for their research and trainers will stress major tensions and trends on L1 education research methodologies.
